I am drawn to the craft of woodcut printmaking for many reasons: it's an interesting process involving a series of quite different stages, beginning with concept and design, through sketching and carving to the final printing. I like the tactile quality of the medium, and the energy transmitted from the heart and hand through gouges and knives to wood, and then, with ink, to paper, leaving its mark in print. I appreciate the challenge and simplicity of black/white design. As for subject matter, my roots are deep in New England soil (I'm travelling the world these days but have eighty years of roots!) so the architecture of buildings and trees or a snowy landscape present me with inspiration on all sides to bring to this art concerned with design in black and white. I have available framed and matted prints, unmatted seconds, some images on pillow covers and others reduced in notecards and postcards.
