I create mt work based on a rubric of knowledge I have learned over thousands of hours of making images and experimenting with colors and mediums. Some painters call it brush mileage.
At the beginning of a painting I observe my subject carefully, then with a clear idea of how to will place my subject on the canvas, I decide what the dominant colors will be.
The painting evolves like a photograph in a developing tray, gradually - as time goes by - the image takes form. I decide on qualities such as value, light to dark, temperature, warm to cool and what kind of mark to leave behind with my brush. Always working within the matrix of the boundaries of my knowledge of the medium.
Most of my paintings are created in an impressionist-realist style known as Alla Prima.
Wet-on-wet, or alla prima (Italian, meaning at first attempt), direct painting or au premier coup, a painting technique in which layers of wet paint are applied to previously administered layers of wet paint.
I work in oil paint, using the finest materials: oil primed linen or double primed canvas, and the finest quality paints and brushes. My paintings are from direct observation of real places, objects, and people.
My style of landscape painting is also referred to as Plein Air painting, or in the open air, implying a direct observation from nature. This way of approaching painting became a style during of the Impressionist movement in art.
My paintings have been published in national magazines, shown internationally, and my work has been accepted into many national juried shows. My paintings have been shown and sold from several New England galleries.
My work is also in numerous private collections across the country. Most recently my work was displayed in the American Embasy in Cambodia as part of the arts in Embasies program.
I have recieved many awards, I have been a member of many national art organizations, including Academic Artists Association, Oil Painters of America, and The American Impressionists Society. I have painted and won awards in several plein-air competitions in the United States including Telluride, Colorado, Tequesta Florida and Castene, Maine.
I have worked inthe visual art field my entire career. It began with finger painting in nursery school. From the beginning the process of transforming a blank page into images has struck me as magical.
And, over the years, that magical process has had its way with me, leading me from my beginnings as a painter, through a career in graphic design, photography, video production, and now back to painting.
It’s been a wonderful journey of creating visual imagery.
