How to purchase our wine
We have two tasting rooms in Vermont, one at the winery in Putney and one in Quechee. Our wines and liqueurs are available in stores throughout Vermont. Our liqueurs are available in N.H.
We craft a collection of unique wines and liqueurs.
What surprises many people is that Putney Mountain Wines are made not from grapes, but from fresh produce grown by local farmers and growers.
Learning our Craft
We learned to make wine and liqueurs by reading and learning from others, along with vivid culinary imaginations, and of course, trial and error.
Every year or two we come up with a new product and start learning again. We began with sparkling apple wines, moved on from one fruit wine to another and then to an array of liqueurs and apple brandy.
Crazy though it might sound, our wines have their roots in music. Charles has had a long, internationally recognized career as a composer. Beginning in the late 1960s, against all odds (think punch cards) he fostered the craft of using computers to construct digital voices for his music.
He has brought the same creative approach to making our products–each is his own signature recipe and carefully crafted formula. But we all (including extended family and friends) get to taste-test them before release!
our favorite crafting “Tool”
Our favorite “tool” is the extraordinary mix of local ingredients that bring our wines and liqueurs to life.
We source fruits, maple syrup, honey, root (ginger), and vegetable (rhubarb) from different farmers and orchardists in our corner of New England.
As for the one ingredient that comes from “away”, we get premium cacao nibs for our decadent Simply Chocolate liqueur through Tavernier Chocolates in Brattleboro.
We believe that the best wine is made from produce of the region. The Connecticut River valley is home to world-class fruit production. What makes our wines and liqueurs special is “the taste of the place.”
RECENT RECOGNITION
Our Northern Spy sparkling apple wine (named for the apple variety used) has a distinguished record. This year it was named “Best Fruit Wine” at the Atlantic Seaboard Wine Association’s annual competition in Virginia, and in 2018 it was chosen to christen the USS Vermont submarine at an elaborate ceremony in Groton, Connecticut. The generous splash of bubbles was impressive.
Among many awards over the years, Vermont Cassis liqueur made with black currants, blueberries and raspberries won Best in Show at the New York World Wine and Spirits competition in 2019.
